Ahrefs review: Research competing pages before commissioning an article

The short version

A useful starting point

Consider Ahrefs when competitor-page and backlink research will change an editorial brief.

A good fit if…

Editors and consultants researching competing websites.

Look elsewhere if…

You only need performance information about your own site.

An editor who already has a topic backlog needs a way to decide which pages deserve closer investigation. Ahrefs is worth considering when that decision depends on competing websites and their links. The useful output is a short research brief that changes an assignment, not another exported keyword list.

What Site Explorer contributes

The official Site Explorer page describes organic-search research, backlink inspection and paid-traffic analysis. Those are outside-in views of a domain. They can suggest pages to inspect, but they do not give an editor access to a competitor’s customer records or prove that a topic will sell a product.

Turn a report into an assignment

For a hypothetical newsletter business, choose one subject already connected to an offer. Compare three relevant competing pages and read the pages themselves. Record the question each one answers, the evidence it supplies and the reader it seems to serve. A frequently linked resource might earn attention because it includes an original dataset; reproducing its headings would miss the reason it is useful.

Keep two columns in the brief: what you observed on the published page and what you infer from the research tool. This prevents a traffic indicator from becoming an invented claim about sales. End the brief with the evidence your own writer can obtain and the task the reader should be able to complete.

Where the subscription can disappoint

If nobody can turn research into publishing decisions, a larger database mainly creates more work to sort. Avoid using one score as an automatic approval rule. A narrow specialist query may support your product better than a broad subject with more apparent demand. Compare access and usage allowances for the research you actually repeat, rather than buying for an occasional comprehensive export.

A useful evaluation exercise

Take one article you plan to update and one you are considering commissioning. Ask whether the research changes the audience, evidence requirements or choice between those assignments. Save the reasoning alongside the proposed brief. If both decisions remain unchanged, first improve your editorial selection process before expanding the tool budget.

Compare the workflow with the other options in our task-based comparison.

Review scope

This is a research-based editorial assessment of the linked official documentation, not a hands-on test or a performance benchmark. Suggested trials are evaluation exercises, not reported results. Confirm current plan access, charges and integration requirements before subscribing. Sources checked on 2026-10-24.

Strengths

  • Supports a competitor-research workflow with a defined editorial output.

Limitations

  • Research indicators do not establish customer demand or revenue.

Before you decide

  • Inspect the actual competing pages.
  • Separate observed facts from research-based hypotheses.
  • Check usage allowances for the sites and reports you need.
