Matomo review: Choose the operating model before designing the reports

The short version

A useful starting point

Consider Matomo when deployment ownership and reporting flexibility are part of the decision.

A good fit if…

Teams able to assign both analytics and operational responsibility.

Look elsewhere if…

You have no owner for the maintenance required by your chosen deployment.

Choosing an analytics tool also means deciding who will operate it. Matomo deserves consideration when the reporting requirements include control over deployment as well as campaign measurement. Start by naming the person responsible for the service, because a useful report still depends on a maintained installation and a consistent measurement design.

What the documentation establishes

Matomo lists website reports, goals and event tracking, and offers Cloud and On-Premise routes. Those choices affect the work surrounding the reports. A self-managed deployment puts maintenance responsibilities on your team; a managed service still requires decisions about access, tracking configuration and how the results will be interpreted.

Write the questions before the event map

For a hypothetical resource site, begin with three questions: which campaigns bring people to the library, which resource links they select and whether the intended completion occurs. Give each event a plain definition. A resource click and a finished download may not be the same event, so record what the implementation actually observes.

Create a short dictionary of event names, relevant pages and the person allowed to change them. Without that record, a site redesign can silently change what a report means. Keep reporting changes with the release notes for the page or campaign that introduced them.

Include the operational cost

For On-Premise, assess who will handle updates, backups, storage growth and recovery. Include that time when comparing the route with Cloud. If no one can explain how a failed update would be recovered, resolve the ownership issue before relying on the installation. Avoid choosing self-management solely because a software download is available.

Evaluate the report and its upkeep together

Use one non-sensitive example journey and follow it through the reports you actually need. Ask a colleague to interpret the resulting numbers using your event dictionary. Then review how access is granted and how configuration changes are recorded. The stronger choice is the deployment you can operate consistently while producing useful reports, rather than the one with the largest theoretical control surface.

Review scope

This is a research-based editorial assessment of the linked official documentation, not a hands-on test or a performance benchmark. Suggested trials are evaluation exercises, not reported results. Confirm current plan access, charges and integration requirements before subscribing. Sources checked on 2026-10-24.

Strengths

  • Cloud and On-Premise options allow an explicit operational choice.

Limitations

  • Self-management adds maintenance and recovery work beyond report setup.

Before you decide

  • Choose the deployment and name its operator.
  • Define goals and event names.
  • Include maintenance time in the cost comparison.
