Microsoft Clarity review: Investigate where a landing-page visit gets stuck

The short version

A useful starting point

Consider Microsoft Clarity for focused investigations of page interactions.

A good fit if…

Owners with a defined landing-page or navigation question.

Look elsewhere if…

You only need weekly campaign totals or have no plan to review recordings.

A landing page can receive visits without telling you why people stop. Microsoft Clarity is a candidate when you need to inspect interaction patterns and form a page-improvement hypothesis. It is most useful alongside a defined question, such as whether visitors can find the information needed before opening a signup form.

Recordings and heatmaps answer different questions

Microsoft documents session recordings and heatmaps showing interactions such as clicks and scrolling. A recording lets you inspect a sequence; a heatmap summarizes activity across visits. Neither reveals a visitor’s private intention. Treat an apparent hesitation as something to investigate, not a statement that the person disliked the price or distrusted the business.

Start with one journey

For a hypothetical workshop page, trace the path from the introduction to the date details and the booking button. Review several relevant visits and keep a small observation log. Describe visible behavior, such as repeated clicks on a noninteractive element, separately from the explanation you think might account for it.

Check the page yourself on the same device category. A missed button could be below a long section, hidden by an overlay or simply irrelevant to that visitor. Propose one change that addresses the observed obstacle, then decide what evidence would make you retain or reverse it. Watching more recordings without writing down a question can become an unproductive habit.

Plan what should be captured

Before using behavioral recording, review the current setup controls, masking, consent integration and access arrangements for your site. Keep payment, account and other sensitive journeys within an appropriate collection policy. The presence of a recording tool does not settle those choices for the owner. Avoid adding personal information to page URLs or labels just to make a session easier to recognize.

Judge the usefulness of the investigation

An evaluation exercise should end with an observation, an alternative explanation and a proposed page change. If you only collect interesting clips, the tool has not yet improved the editorial process. For weekly campaign totals, use aggregate reporting; return to recordings when a specific journey needs closer investigation.

Review scope

This is a research-based editorial assessment of the linked official documentation, not a hands-on test or a performance benchmark. Suggested trials are evaluation exercises, not reported results. Confirm current plan access, charges and integration requirements before subscribing. Sources checked on 2026-10-24.

Strengths

  • Recordings and heatmaps can support different parts of an investigation.

Limitations

  • Visible behavior does not establish a visitor’s intention.

Before you decide

  • Define one journey and one question.
  • Review collection, masking and access settings.
  • Check observations directly on the relevant page and device.
